Nina Canell è l’artista visiva che guiderà gli studenti della seconda edizione del nostro corso avanzato nella fase finale del percorso. Il percorso include lecture, seminari, tutoraggio individuale e attività esperienziali nel contesto urbano ed extraurbano per favorire l’incontro tra artisti e curatori dell’area del Mediterraneo con artisti e curatori riconosciuti su scala internazionale. Il workshop si svolgerà nell’autunno 2020.
Nina Canell è un’artista visiva svedese, di stanza a Berlino. Una volta ha realizzato una scultura che ha provocato un inaspettato black out in dieci case contemporaneamente una volta al mese nell’arco di un intero anno. L’energia è stata una preoccupazione integrante del suo lavoro sin dall’inizio della sua ricerca, inteso come connettore tra il corpo e lo spazio. Canell ha frequentato la Scuola d’arte a Dublino, una città con una scena artistica effervescente, in cui la musica giocava un ruolo altrettanto importante rispetto a quella delle arti visive. Dopo essersi imbattuta in una registrazione di Alvin Luicier “I’m sitting in a room” (1969) in qualità di studente, Canell ha iniziato ad interrogarsi su come la struttura di una composizione e la sua qualità spaziale del suono potesse tradursi in scultura.
Nina Canell (* 1979, Växjö, Svezia) vive e lavora a Berlino. Le sue mostre personali sono state ospitate a Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (2019); S.M.A.K, Gand (2018); Kunstmuseum St. Gallen (2018); The Artist’s Institute, New York (2017); Museo Tamayo, Città del Messico (2017); Arko Art Center, Seoul (2016); Moderna Museet, Stoccolma (2014), Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlino (2012) e Friedericianum, Kassel (2011). Robin Watkins è un artista multimediale irlandese-svedese che lavora principalmente con suoni e immagini. Watkins ha presentato audio screening a La Casa Encendida, Madrid (2017), Witte de With, Rotterdam (2015), Mount Analogue, Stoccolma (2013), Kunsthaus Glarus (2011), Project Arts Centre, Dublino (2010) e ICA, Londra (2009). Collabora frequentemente con Nina Canell. Le loro opere collaborative sono state esposte al Museo Tamayo, Città del Messico (2017); Moderna Museet Stockholm (2014); Biennale di Lione (2015); Sydney Biennale (2012); Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel (2011), MUMOK, Vienna (2010), tra gli altri luoghi. Watkins ha studiato al Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology di Dublino 2001-2005.
Nina Canell and Robin Watkins will lead the international workshop that will take place in autumn 2020, as the final step of the second edition of the advanced course for visual art and contemporary culture promoted by PIA – A circulating place for artists and curators. An educational program which includes lectures, workshops, individual mentoring for art production and educational experiences in both urban and natural landscapes. The schedule ends with a week where the students interact with an international artist and curator, invited by PIA, in order to encourage a dialogue between the students and international artists and curators. The artist mentor of 2020 is Nina Canell who will develop the activities together with Robin Watkins.
Nina Canell once made a sculpture for ten people that caused the electricity in their homes to go out simultaneously and unannounced once every month for a year. The transfer and distribution of energy has been an integral preoccupation of her work since the beginning, often working with situations that are highly sensitive to spatio-temporal variables. Grounded as much in the chance encounter as in close study, her sculptural process foregrounds material agency.
